What colleagues and other experts dismissed as a slightly bizarre idea has become one of the main components of the success story Beauty Queens. The idea to cultivate heather in a plastic plant pot even brought the grower Holz the horticultural innovations award. The printed plastic plant pot in combination with the matching green transport tray from Poeppelmann TEKU turns heather into a distinctive product.
“It has been my aim to accentuate novelties so that they are easily recognizable.” states Hans-Peter Holz. “I provide high-quality and well-performing varieties and therefore the customer should be able to identify them immediately. And this works perfectly with the green pot from Poeppelmann.”
The collection consists of many different varieties with widely staggered blossom times and various colours from white to dark red. All of them are promoted under the trademark Beauty Queens. An outstanding characteristic is the candle-shaped shoot full of blossoms. Another benefit is the cultivation time which is six to eight weeks shorter compared to traditional breeds.
For almost 40 years the company Holz has been a loyal Poeppelmann customer. And a fundamental factor is the TEKU sales representative Ulrich Christlieb. He helped to syntonise the cultivation to the plastic plant pot and to deliberate on the printing options. “The pot and the green transport tray are a significant part of the success.” emphasises Holz.
Not only finding the right irrigation and drainage strategies had to be considered during the transition to cultivation in plastic plant pots. Also the decision on the cultivation pot itself played an important role. In the beginning, Holz used a customary pot with a plain 6-hole bottom. However this pot did not seem to be a 100% convincing solution when it came to drainage. Today he utilises the better alternative equipped with the multi-hole profile bottom.
Rather than having a plain bottom this pot has got an inwardly arched bottom with irrigation holes on two levels. The holes in the upper level do not have any contact to the ground and therefore guarantee a fast and direct water flow while the lower bottom holes assure an effective capillary drainage.
The consultation and the reliable partnership with Poeppelmann are the real added value which Holz highly appreciates. Locking for solutions that promise success for the grower is the conviction of the company based in Lohne/Germany. As a specialist in the plastics processing industry Poeppelmann uses its strength in order to develop new products on a regular basis which meet the grower’s requests and offer a real added value.
